Ali Kazma

Prison

2013

Ali Kazma, Prison, 2013 — video HD from Resistance series
The video Prison was filmed at the Sakarya detention center in Turkey. The official portrait of Atatürk, the first president of the Turkish Republic, and the lyrics of the Turkish national anthem, both displayed on the walls, provide clues that allow us to geographically identify this location. It is almost a silent film, as quiet as the snow falling on the building. The camera slowly moves through empty spaces: hallways, then what might be a sewing and knitting workshop, a classroom, and a ceremonial hall. The vivid colors of these more intimate spaces contrast with the muted shades—beige and pink—of the prison corridors. The viewer is confronted with the concept of surveillance: Kazma chose to film the monitors in the control room, on whose screens people can be seen moving.
