Oltremare

Oltremare is a video work made on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The video explores movements and displacements between land and sea in a landscape where leaving is at once a historical condition and an almost existential one. Rooted in the artist’s family history, the video moves through the past and present of this area: from the geological movements of a landscape once covered by the sea, to recent human migrations. Oltremare develops a visual narrative about belonging and the desire to move beyond, weaving personal memories into the collective history of a territory. Two voices talk about memories of emigration, while the surrounding landscape fills the screens. The rhythm of the machinery at the port of Gioia Tauro recalls the flow of a community in constant motion, while the silence of abandoned places contrasts with the noise of the young people who live in the coastal town today.
