Il silenzio di Pelešjan

2011

Pietro Marcello, Il silenzio di Pelešjan, 2011 — film, found footage

Il silenzio di Pelešjan is a homage to the work of the Armenian director of the same name, and in particular to his poetics, marked by a strong emotional and human component. Using the found-footage technique, the film takes up unpublished material from the web and from archives, mixed with newly shot sequences. Pietro Marcello recalls the “distance montage” theorised by Pelešjan in an essay in the seventies, which is based on setting shots at a distance from one another rather than on their contiguity. In this way the film brings out the capacity for emotional construction typical of the Armenian director’s practice. The film was selected by the Video Sound Art team in collaboration with the programmers of Cinema Nuovo Eden for the XIII edition of Video Sound Art Festival.
