Blanche-Neige Lucie

1997

Pierre Huyghe, Blanche-Neige Lucie, 1997 — Betacam

In Blanche-Neige Lucie the artist films Lucie Dolène, the French voice of Walt Disney’s Snow White, as she describes her struggle to protect her rights as a performer, which had been taken from her by Disney. The speech is dissociated from the image and Lucie Dolène’s story is delivered as subtitles. Drawing on the history of cinema, the artist puts narrative space into perspective in order to question the relations that fiction has with reality. It is the relationships between Lucie, the truth of the character and the film studio that create a complex parable about voice and identity.
