Giuseppe Boccassini

Italy — works between Germany and Italy

Giuseppe Boccassini is a film-maker who lives between Berlin and Italy. He has developed a line of research centred on found footage, archival practices and experimental cinema. In recent years his work has explored the historical and formal dimensions of film noir and melodrama: film noir is at the heart of Ragtag (2022), while melodrama is the central theme of Desire (2025). Since 2017 he has been director of FRACTO – Experimental Film Encounter, a festival devoted to experimental cinema held at ACUD Kunsthaus in Berlin.
His research also extends to industrial film, explored in Blast Furnace (2024), where archive images emerge as an immediate presence – closer to a living nature than to a technological device. The film builds an immersive, phenomenological visual experience, revealing the optical unconscious of the camera and the vitality of its mechanical gaze.
His films have been screened at major international festivals and institutions, including the Venice International Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia), FIDMarseille, Ji.hlava IDFF, Jerusalem IFF, Torino Film Festival, IndieLisboa, Image Forum in Tokyo and the Museum of the Moving Image in New York, where Ragtag was presented in a conversation with the film theorist Tom Gunning.
In 2025 the Beijing International Short Film Festival (BISFF) devoted a retrospective to his work.
