How deep can a dragonfly swim under the ocean?

2021

Driant Zeneli, How deep can a dragonfly swim under the ocean?, 2021 — 4K film, colour, sound

How deep can a dragonfly swim under the ocean? is the second chapter of the trilogy The Animals. Once Upon a Time…in the present Time. Zeneli films a space we will never see again, a few weeks before renovation work begins. The Pyramid of Tirana, a memorial to the dictator Enver Hoxha built in the 1980s, is about to become one of the most important technology centres in the Balkans, to a design by a Dutch architecture firm.
Under the spotlights, a robot dragonfly is condemned never to fly; to survive, it feeds on the fossil of an octopus that holds it back, making it hostage to its own nourishment.
Zeneli’s film fables are born from chance encounters, and the answer to questions that seem to have none is part of the process of collective creation that runs through the whole trilogy. Driant decides to contact Rilond Risto on social media, a man who says he spent 21 years in prison unjustly and who, during his last years in isolation, made small mechanical insects able to fly, with whatever means came to hand. The dream takes shape through the little dragonfly made by Risto. Power relations and History intertwine with individual narratives, giving rise to utopias that subvert the natural order of things in the endless attempt to break away from a context imposed by society.
