Davide Angheleddu, La mappa del Blériot, 2015 — immersive virtual environment from panoramic images

A work inspired by the artist’s doctoral research at the Politecnico di Milano, which deals with developing techniques for optimising three-dimensional models for large-scale use. In particular, models obtained through laser scanning and digital photogrammetry, commonly used in the cultural heritage field, are highly complex and hard to use with the ordinary applications found on the devices most widespread among the general public (tablets, smartphones, low-end PCs). Angheleddu applies a process of geometric simplification that exploits the possibility of transferring the geometric information of the 3D model to suitable two-dimensional maps.
In particular, the work uses panoramic images to build an immersive virtual setting that offers a complete view of the environment surrounding the observer. Angheleddu chose as his subject the famous Blériot aircraft, the first to cross the Channel successfully, in 1909. The virtual tour lets visitors explore the aircraft from several viewpoints linked to the corresponding hotspots. Users can thus find themselves in the pilot’s seat of the Blériot or take a different perspective that highlights striking construction details.
