America bajo el agua

The sculpture is inspired by the ‘Upside-Down Map of the Americas’ (América Invertida, 1943) created by the Uruguayan painter Joaquín Torres García. This illustration of an upside-down South America has become a symbol of the continent’s efforts to assert its centrality. Torres García placed the South Pole at the top of the world, as a visual statement of South America’s importance, offering an alternative world view rather than the one the rest of the world seeks to impose on South America.
